Moors and Christians in Busot

Unfortunately, with the current quarantine situation, the Moors and Christians festivities of this year 2020 have had to be cancelled, which means that we will have to party even harder next year!

Under normal circumstances, in Busot, the Moors and Christians festivities are always held one week after Easter. Each village has a different date because they have a religious connotation since they are performed in honor of a patron saint of the village, which means, each village will celebrate it on the date of the onomastic of their patron, so at any date of the year, it is very possible to find somewhere in the Levantine area celebrating their Moors and Christians festivities.

Moors and Christians have become one of the most widespread festivals in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia and offer spectacular experiences for residents and tourists to enjoy year after year.

Each village is proud to incorporate some unique elements into its fiesta and enjoy long days and nights of music and gunpowder!

Below, we will tell you more about how the Moors and Christians festivities are celebrated in Busot ...

Before the main days of the festivities, there are several preparations and events that take place. One of the most important events for the people of the village is the Presentation of Captains; A very emotional act that takes place in the Caves of Canelobre and during which everyone enjoys the live music of the Village Music Band with Moorish and Christian marches and traditional dances. The captains who are proclaimed in this event are the protagonists of these festivities. This year, 2020, would have been the first year in the history of the Moors and Christians festivities in Busot in which two women held the position of Captain and Abanderada of the Moro side. But we will enjoy them next year 2021.

Other pre-festival events include the concert of "Music Festera" performed by the Musical Union of Busot. In addition, the traditional "soparets" are held on Saturdays before the festivities, where each comparsa (group of friends participating in the festivities) dine at their respective "barraca" (a temporary party place where they gather to enjoy lunches and dinners).

During the four days of celebration, the streets of Busot are filled with colour and majesty and there are several different specific acts:

"La Entrada" is the most important parade where the Moorish and Christian captaincy show off their best galas and are accompanied by a spectacular float made for the occasion.

The Mora and Christian embassies where a verbal battle takes hold of the attention of its spectators. The guerrillas, where the catapults spread that smell of gunpowder through the streets of the village for a couple of hours. The offering of flowers in honor of St. Joseph, patron of the hermitage of the village. The majestic Procession in which homage is paid to the two saints to St. Joseph and St. Vincent, patron saint of the village and as well as many parties and many meals !!

The town hall prints a guide to explain the schedules of each event and organizes an auxiliary parking in the fields just before the large parking lot in front of the medical center and the House of Culture. There is disabled parking and a space to leave older people near the CaTono restaurant and from there you can walk to the Town Hall Square, where there are seats to watch the parades (and there always seem to be enough seats as many people also sit on the steps of the town hall).

There are many firecrackers, gunfire and gunpowder explosions during these days, so it's best to keep dogs away from the town center during the festivities.

We hope you find this information useful and we look forward to seeing you all during the celebrations!
